Dye is offering an update for MXR users free of charge. This is a welcome update given the marker has been plagued with issues since its release. Is this enough to save the MXR? We will see, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Why you may need this

As mentioned, the MXR has not had the best release. Some users have had a wonderful time with it and others have had nothing but a headache. Specifically small paint and weather issues have been addressed. Even if you have not had issues with your MXR it is recommended to reach out to Dye and update your parts.

What you get (and why)

The main issue the MXR has had is paint handling. Dye has said the smaller paint used in some sections of the country have been a major issue and explains why some have had problems and others have not. To address these issues dye is sending out a revised breech sleeve to prevent double feeding and a new bolt tip that helps with roll back.

Some lesser known issues were also addressed. A new body o ring is said to help with trigger issues and new battery door springs help with a power issue. Dye has had complaints of guns turning off after a dive. Essentially the board loses power briefly and the gun has to be turned back on.

Free (for most of you)

Dye is offering these updates free of charge to customers in the mainland USA with proof of ownership, this includes markers purchased second hand which is very nice to see. Other locations require you to pay shipping. Though shipping fees are not the end of the world I would have liked to see these offered for free at participating Dye retailers, shipped in bulk to lower the cost to Dye. If you are playing in the NXL this year you can likely stop by their booth if you want to avoid dealing with shipping, but Dye has advised you contact them in advance as there is always a risk of them running out.

There is also a chance that you have some of these parts already, but either way it is recommended to reach out to Dye as you may not have all of the updates.

Too little too late?

Though it is nice to see Dye doing an update this does seem to be a trend with the company. Many first releases have minor issues that are then fixed in the “+” version down the road. I’m glad they are taking these issues head on and are clearly trying to make things right to their customers. Time will tell if these fixes solve the MXR’s issues, but almost more importantly we will have to see if this release has done long term harm to the models reputation and to the Dye brand.
